30 Fun Activities For You and Your Child

Homework is an opportunity for children to learn and for families to be involved in their children’s education. Homework helps our children to: review and practice what they’ve covered in class, prepare for the next day’s lesson, learn to use resources (library, reference materials, Web sites), habits and study skills.

In addition, homework can help create greater understanding between families and teachers and provide opportunities for increased communication.

Here are some tips to help our children develop good study and homework habits:
1. Set a Regular Time for Homework
2. Pick a Place (quiet, well lit, close to a monitoring parent, equipped with materials)
3. Remove Distractions
4. Identify Appropriate Resources
5. Set a Good Example (model reading, writing, researching skills)
6. Be Involved—Appropriately (monitor but don’t complete your child’s homework for them)
7. Give Practice Tests
8. Talk About Assignments (check for understanding).
